Last night

by Bill Northey

Libby Jacobs had a birthday (one with a zero) party fundraiser in West Des Moines last night. She had a nice crowd of supporters there. She's a great Representative and I was glad to be able to be there.
Then I headed over to the Waukee High School and was able to speak with the Dallas County Republicans. Though I was too late for their steak, I did get there in time for some good conversation.

Student Conversations
Posted: Tuesday, October 03, 2006 - 4:23:27 PM
by Bill Northey

I spoke with some DMACC students in Ankeny today as they ate lunch in their Student Center. We talked about agriculture, ethanol and the Secy of Ag campaign. Afterwards we had lunch prepared by the Culinary Arts Program students - mmmm! They have a four year waiting list to get into the program. I will be back...
I was able to talk with the Grape and Wine Growers in Des Moines. They have concerns about lack of support for their industry. The industry is growing dramatically with a new winery being established in Iowa about every two weeks! These wineries and the grapes being grown for them require significant investment - and create jobs.

Monday in Ames
Posted: Monday, October 02, 2006 - 10:18:17 PM
by Bill Northey

Wow, all day in one town! I met with the Ames Tribune Editorial Board. We had a great conversation about the future of agriculture and the role of the Secy of Ag. I headed to the AGR House near the ISU Campus. We taped some footage for KCCI election coverage. Then I spoke to the House at their evening meal. The were very nice (considering I'm a FarmHouser) and asked great questions. We are all on the same side supporting agriculture! Congress Latham (an AGR Alum) joined us at the House. The Congressman is a friend of mine from "way back" and great friend of ISU and Iowa Agriculture. I'm proud to be on the same ballot with him. We left AGR and went to FarmHouse Fraternity (I was the Congressman's bodyguard there). The guys were generous to allow us some time during their meeting. Afterwards we got lots on new signatures for the FFV pickup. We have plenty of FH and AGR markings on the truck now. Great guys doing great work. Two of the best houses on campus. I thank them for the opportunity to be with them - and for their support!!

Busy Sunday

by Bill Northey

I started the day in Huxley at the Allen Hotel (don't look for it in the Yellow Pages - it is family, and I spend more time there than I do at home). Thanks Doug, Valerie and Ryan. I stopped by the Congressman Leach event in Cedar Rapids in Dwight Hughes' barn. Dwight is generous with his beautiful barn and it is always great to see the Congressman! Then I headed to the Cove Restaurant near Tipton for the Cedar County Republican event. Good conversation and a good pie auction. After passing out some signs, Jeff Kaufmann and I left for Muscatine. A nice event there with a late speaker addition of former Governor of Wisconsin and former US Secy of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson. He was fired up about the election. I think he will be back in the state many more times before Jan 2008... Now I'm heading back to Huxley.

Warren County Republicans

by Bill Northey

Warren County Republicans gathered in Indianola this evening for spaghetti and speeches. As one of the speakers, I hope the speeches measured up to the spaghetti. I'm sure they did (but the spaghetti was really quite good).
I slipped out to head to the second half of the ISU football game. Glad the second half was better than the first half of the game!

Republican Women are the workers (okay, so are some of the guys)!
The women gathered today to hear candidates and to get fired up for the final 38 days of this campaign season.
It was good to get our calendars coordinated and plan the work for the rest of the race. Now we'll all get to work!

Daughter Emily put together an evening event at her Sigma Kappa House at ISU. It was a nice evening of support for those with the disease or with family members with the disease. It was also just a nice evening.
Emily and all did a nice job. It was fun to be able to be there.

Pataki Office Opening
Posted: Friday, September 29, 2006 - 10:39:38 AM
by Bill Northey

Lots of Republicans gathered in West Des Moines for the opening of NY Governor George Pataki's Presidential Campaign PAC office.
It was good to see so many there and get more pickup signatures - including the Governor's signature. The Governor is putting together a nice team. Some were there because lots of Republicans were gathered and they have not decided their presidencial preference (including me). But, folks are beginning to line up...

Grassley Funder

by Bill Northey

Senator Chuck Grassley hosted a fundraiser for me at the Bistro Bris Restaurant in Washington, DC. We had a nice group of ag folks there that recognize the significance of the Iowa Secy of Agriculture in the national policy debate. It was also good to see some old friends from my days in the National Corn Growers Assn.
It was a beautiful day to be in WDC, but back on the plane this afternoon to head back to Iowa.

Michele Rook of WNAX in Yankton, SD hosted a Secy of Ag Discussion her talk show at 1pm today. WNAX has good coverage into NW Iowa.
We talked about ag issues of importance to Iowans (and South Dakotans), from livestock to ethanol and biodiesel to farm bill.
Next Karey and I will jump on a plane and head to Washington DC.

Stutsman Steaks
Posted: Tuesday, September 26, 2006 - 9:21:21 PM
by Bill Northey

Mark Stutsman hosted an event for me in Hills. We talked to local farmers and others about the ag race and things going on in today's agriculture. Some of what is going on is soybean harvest! That cut into the crowd a little, but we still had a good discussion. I appreciate Mark's help and support! Great steaks by the Johnson County Cattlemen's Assn.

My wife Cindy has her birthday today. She is a great supporter of this campaign. She has been very understanding of my time on the road and helps a bunch taking care of things when I'm on the road (which is almost all the time). I love her lots and wish I was home with her today.

Senator David Miller and (to-be Senator) Keith Caviness hosted a agricultural roundtable discussion. It was good to be able to share some thoughts and hear concerns. I got a few signatures on the pickup (Keith's signature was taped by the local TV reporter) and did a television interview. A worthwhile trip.

Putney Picnic
Posted: Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 9:42:54 PM
by Bill Northey

Senator John Putney hosts a fall picnic at his farm. Folks travel from all over the state to support John and eat pork chops on a stick and funnel cakes. I've heard of this picnic before and am glad to have the chance to be able to finally make the picnic. I got a chance to say a few words and thank the crowd for sending a good man to the Iowa Senate. Thanks John for all your work and for your leadership (and for the pork chop and funnel cake).

GOPfest

Polk County puts on a nice shingdig in September and they call it GOPfest. Good to be there with so many good Republicans, including Bill Frist, Chuck Grassley, Steve King, Jeff Lamberti, Mary Ann Hanusa and many legislators and legislative candidates.
We got some more pickup signatures from the folks, including from Governor Ray. Later I bought Billie Ray's pie at the pie auction.
A good time was had by all!

Beaverdale Parade & FFV Pickup
Posted: Saturday, September 23, 2006 - 2:36:10 PM
by Bill Northey

Cindy brought down our new pickup, a FFV that can use E85. We have a wrap on the pickup that allows folks to sign it with permanent markers. Kind of fun. We even got comments from the McDonalds Drive Thru staff!
We took it to the Beaverdale Parade and got some signatures. It was fun to walk the parade with our crew - Cindy, Maggie, Ellen and Rod Williamson and kids. We passed out a bunch of candy and lots of Northey stickers. Good to see some friends along the route.
I think the kids like a parade almost better than Trick or Treat, after all you don't have to dress up and the candy is delivered to you!
We were just in front of the Dahl's entry that included the Pillsbury Doughboy. A couple of times I thought I caught folks calling me the Doughboy, but they were looking at the Dahl's entry... Maybe I'm a little selfconscience about too many McDonald Drive Thrus.

Last night the ISU College Republicans got together to listen to candidates and get fired up for the final run to November 7th.
Don McDowell is the leader of the group and put on a great dinner with a super lineup of speakers. Senator Bill Frist spoke to the group and related the challenges of "leading" 99 very independent Senators.
A hundred and fifty students, parents and political folks were in attendance. A very successful evening!
It was fun to be there with my daughter Emily...

This is THE North Scott Rotary!
I have heard great things about this group from many different circles. They did not disappoint. They have an active group with a nice mix of farmers, ag folks and non-ag folks. They asked great questions and were a fun group to be with. Many of the folks are real movers and shakers in Scott County.

Iowa City Chamber Ag Forum

by Bill Northey

Good to get back to Iowa City, this time for a Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee Forum. I've spent more time in Iowa City in this campaign than I have any other time in my life! My wife, Cindy, is jealous. She's the University of Iowa grad - I'm the Iowa State grad.
This morning we had a candidate forum for Secy of Ag. We are having lots of forums. While the crowds aren't always large, we are sure giving folks a chance to see the significant difference between the candidates! Good to have some press here this morning, including James Lynch from the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
Thanks to Jim Dane and others for arranging the Forum.

Hubbard's in Gowrie
Posted: Thursday, September 21, 2006 - 1:56:21 PM
by Bill Northey

This morning I traveled to Gowrie for a coffee arranged by Representative David Tjepkes at the home of Jean and Doc Hubbard. Jean was a girlhood friend of my Mom back in their Minburn days. Mom and Dad came down to the coffee and the Hubbards hosted a house full of farmers and other locals. We talked about the opportunities in agriculture and what needs to be done!
It was fun to here some talk about the hog buying firm and farmers Hill (Mom's grandfather) and Burkett (Jean's grandfather). Agriculture, including livestock agriculture, has been a cornerstone of Iowa for a century!

Iowa Rural Health Association

by Bill Northey

We had a question and answer session with a small group of rural health care professionals at the Iowa Hygenic Lab on the DMACC Campus in Ankeny.
We discussed the opportunities for partnerships between IDALS and other departments to research and promote rural health issues.
We also got to tour the Iowa Medical Examiners' facilities and the Hygenic Lab. Very impressive building! Glad I didn't have to witness an active autopsy - but glad we have great expertise and facilities when they are needed. I'm looking forward to visiting the IDALS facilities there someday...

The Iowa Biotechnology Association met near Iowa City today. They discussed the health opportunities around biotech at this conference. Last year they focused their meeting around the agricultural aspects of biotech.
I was able to attend part of the meeting and to introduce Bob Vander Plaats to the group.
We can now see the great promise of biotech that has been in the works for years. So many exciting opportunities are in the biotech pipeline...

Steve Olson Fundraiser

by Bill Northey

Steve Olson is a great ag Representative. You can tell by the crowd how a person is respected and the crowd tonight confirmed Steve's respect locally and statewide.
Steve had a great crowd and lots of local support. Also attending were Bob Vander Plaats, David Vaudt, myself and guest-of-honor Representative Libby Jacobs.
Food and hospitality was great - but most of all we were there to support Steve.

Thanks to Steve Johnson for arranging the Rotary program and the forum.

Taylor and Ringold FB Annual Meetings
Posted: Monday, September 18, 2006 - 9:22:18 PM
by Bill Northey

When there are two FB Annual Meetings only a few miles apart I'm there! Tonight it was Ringold and Taylor County FBs that had their meetings. So I traveled to Lenox and Mount Ayr - as did Congressman Steve King and his ag guy, Wayne Brincks.
We got to see many good folks and got to thank FB for the Friend of Ag Designation we both received.
I enjoyed getting to hear a presentation by farm broadcaster Tom Brand about his trip to the WTO Ministerial in Hong Kong. Good to see Tom again. We used to talk from time-to-time during my Corn Grower Days.

I was glad to get back to the Iowa Environmental Council to talk with them about our campaign and my views.
There are so many opportunities! I look forward to the chance to work together. We won't agree on all the issues, but we do agree on many things and certainly have the same goal in mind - working to make sure Iowa waters are clean and the soil stays on the land.
Technology is changing and offers us an opportunity to do even more in the future.

Dwight Hughes Superhost
Posted: Sunday, September 17, 2006 - 5:32:39 PM
by Bill Northey

Dwight Hughes has a plant nursery business in Cedar Rapids. He also has a great barn that is just made for events! Today Supervisor Candidate Dave Machacek and I shared a fundraiser in Dwight's barn. It was a nearly perfect day as things have cooled off and the "barn temp" was just right.
It was fun to have my Mom and Dad there. They have sat beside Dwight and his family at ISU football games. They came over yesterday for a tour of Dwight's business and for some time to talk about business, ISU and families.
Thanks to all those who came by and for all the support. And thanks especially to Dwight for hosting us!
Special thanks to Congressman Jim Leach for stopping by the event. I appreciate his support and encouragement. Stop by his event on October 1st in this same barn!
And if you live in Linn County make sure and vote for Dave Machacek for County Supervisor - he will make a great Supervisor!

Waterloo Cattle Congress
Posted: Saturday, September 16, 2006 - 10:08:24 PM
by Bill Northey

Being a gluton for punishment, I thought I ought to get to the Waterloo Cattle Congress yet today. This is just too important to miss - I can sleep later...
I got to the Black Hawk County Republican booth and met several other folks while there. I did see House Candidate Matt Reisetter as he was taking in more supplies for the booth. I was careful to avoid being volunteered to the hypnotist. He did a great job and we don't need any film of me singing like Elvis or surfing on stage. Best to take time meet a few more folks!
There was a BMX bike course set up in one of the buildings. 4H has changed with the times! Still good to see the Hall of Breeds and the dairy cows. The rodeo was in full swing. Fairs are for all ages. It was fun to see a pre-school girl walk up to the Rodeo Queen and say, "You're pretty." It made both their days (mine, too). This was definitely worth the visit.

Short night, then Farmers Market
Posted: Saturday, September 16, 2006 - 7:42:38 PM
by Bill Northey

After getting home late last night, I headed for the Des Moines Farmers Market. I got there as it opened and got to pick up some essential Farmers Market stuff - like jam. I wanted to pick up so many other items - but, they don't all cook so well in a hotel room...
While I got there before 7am, that was like sleeping in to most of the folks there. They had to be up early to gather produce, pack up, travel and get set to sell. It is not all glory - some of it is just hard work!

The BIG Game
Posted: Saturday, September 16, 2006 - 2:58:21 PM
by Bill Northey

After the early morning run to the Des Moines Farmers Market, I headed (along with many other cars and pickups) to Iowa City for the ISU/Iowa football game and the Nussle/Vander Plaats tailgate.
I met Ross Paustian at the Coral Ridge Mall and we took the train into the game. Certainly beats fighting the traffic!
The Nussle camp had a great crowd at the tail gate - they even had two sets of campaign stickers (cardinal and gold and black and gold). Ross and I got to sit with the Vander Plaats boys. They were great. They did enjoy the second half better than the first half so you can guess what colors they were wearing. I enjoyed the first half more - but, was mostly glad it was a competitive game!
The stadium and the weather were beautiful and energy in the crowd was high. It was a great atmosphere and it was great to be an Iowan at the Big Game.

ISU and Yale - A degree in politics

The Master Farmer meeting was in the ISU Memorial Union.
I left there to travel to Yale (Yale, IA, the town not the college). Guthrie County Republicans hosted a afternoon and evening of a pie auction, a dinner and political speeches.
Candidates there were Senator Grassley, Bob Vander Plaats, Nancy Boettger, Clel Baudler and all three statewide officer candidates David Vaudt, Mary Ann Hanusa and myself. This is a great ticket and all enjoyed the evening.

Master Farmer Secy of Ag Forum
Posted: Sunday, September 10, 2006 - 3:02:15 PM
by Bill Northey

This is a wonderful group of folks. These folks have been selected by Farm Progress Publications for their contributions to Iowa Agriculture. Many are good friends and even mentors of mine.
I have a warm spot in my heart for this group - and not just because my father and grandfather and great-grandfather were honored with membership. I would love to have the chance to visit the group again as Iowa Secy of Ag.
Back to today's business! They had a forum for Iowa Secy of Ag where both candidates spoke for a few minutes and answered questions. We had a chance to demonstrate our different visions for Iowa agriculture.

Lee and Des Moines Counties
Posted: Saturday, September 09, 2006 - 10:45:05 PM
by Bill Northey

Today I got to visit Donnellson for the first time. We had a nice Roundtable with Congressman Leach at the Lee County Farm Bureau office.
We moved next door for a fundraiser and had plenty of time to discuss farm issues.
Then off to Burlington for their Steak Fry. I travelled through Ft. Madison on the way. They are having their rodeo this week. My daughter, Jessica, is engaged to Thomas a native of Ft. Madison and they were in town for a wedding. It was fun to call her while in Ft. Madison. And the river is beautiful...
Burlington Steak Fry has a well-deserved great reputation. Tonight's attendees included Congressman Jim Leach, Bob Vander Plaats, David Vaudt, Tom Sands and myself and over a hundred good Republican friends. We met in a shelter overlooking the Mississippi River and ate a great steak. A beautiful evening.
Several hundred miles away the Iowa Christian Alliance was meeting in Clive and Karey represented me at that event.

Iowa Renewable Energy Assn
Posted: Saturday, September 09, 2006 - 1:38:48 PM
by Bill Northey

This group began years ago, long before renewable energy was as hot a topic as today. Their conference attendance has grown steadily. This was the first year at the Solon High School as they have outgrown their last facility - they still almost ran out of parking.
They provided an opportunity for candidates to speak to some of the attendees. With so many competing workshops most of the folks were more interested in learning about real live solutions to their problems that talking with politicians - certainly don't blame them for that!
I did have a nice informal conversation with several folks about my views regarding renewable energy. I appreciate the chance to be there.

Big Day!!
Posted: Thursday, September 07, 2006 - 11:07:44 PM
by Bill Northey

     A busy campaign day today!
I started the day traveling to the first meeting of the day with some of the folks from the State Soil Conservation Committee. These are folks that have worked countless hours to keep the soil on our land and the water clean in our lakes, rivers and streams. This a an important portion of IDALS (the Iowa Dept of Ag and Land Stewardship). I look forward to being very engaged in this area. I am a Soil Commissioner in Dickinson County and have seen the value of the Division of Soil Conservation and the need for support from the Secy of Ag.
Next Karey and I met with some of the folks from the Equine (horse) Development Task Force. The horse business in Iowa puts nearly $1 billion into the economy and we can do more to showcase and grow this industry.
I spoke to the Iowa Soybean Assn Board and others after a lunch together. It was good to see many friends and campaign supporters there. These are folks that have helped create the great ag economy we have today. They make things happen.
Then off to meet with Jerry Fleagel of the Iowa Grocers Assn. Jerry's members provide our food and other supplies in their big box stores, grocery stores and c-stores. They have an interest in a strong ag economy in Iowa.
I hit the road for SE Iowa for a couple more FB Annual Meetings this time in Mt. Pleasant (Henry County) and Washington (Washington County). The last three nights I have been with about 1000 Farm Bureau members at 4 Annual Meetings. I shook about 600-700 hands. Next Monday I will get to talk to quite a few more FB members at the Scott Co FB - maybe 700 more. This has been a great opportunity to meet many folks and to hear what is on their minds. These are great folks, just trying to earn a living producing food and fuel for others. Things are in good hands.
I can sleep well tonight knowing things are going well and that we are another day closer to the election. Back at it tomorrow!

Iowa Turkey Federation
Posted: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 - 12:59:16 PM

We think of Iowa for its corn and soybeans and for its hogs, cattle, dairy cattle and eggs. Because of the size of those industries, we often don't realize we are leaders in other ag products - like turkeys.
It was good to get back together with the turkey folks and to discuss issues of importance to them. There certainly is concern regarding the ability to grow their business and competition for corn.

Representative Mary Lou Freeman
Posted: Tuesday, September 05, 2006 - 10:47:13 PM
by Bill Northey

Everyone knew and loved Mary Lou Freeman and it is hard to believe we will be without her.
Mary Lou passed away in her home. I was last with her Sunday night at Determan's. She was there to support Steve King and me. She was a team player and as someone said she was political only in the good sense of the word - never in the bad sense of the word. We would all do well to be remembered as Mary Lou will be remembered.
Losing Mary Lou should also remind us how temporary and how precious life really is. So give your family an extra hug, thank the good Lord for another day and live like each day is the gift we all know it is.

Plymouth County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting
Posted: Tuesday, September 05, 2006 - 9:57:51 PM

It is great to have had a lot of practice shaking hands in the campaign. I got to shake hands with most of the 350-400 folks at the Plymouth Co FB meeting tonight.
I had been here a few years back with another political candidate and couldn't wait to be the "shaker" this time. It was good to see some old friends like the Barkers, Johnsons and Klemmes along with many others. I have been in the country several times in the campaign and it was good to see some folks again I met earlier in the campaign.
I have been in the county for the Pheasants Forever Banquet, for the County Fair and with Ralph Klemme for a Christmas Open House. It was good to be able to meet several hundred more folks tonight!
Dennis Morrice helped me again tonight passing out brochures and making sure I got to most everyone. Thanks again Dennis for your help.

Sunrise eggs

I got a chance to swing by Sunrise eggs this morning and got to meet and talk with Iowa Poultry Assn President Joe Laffoon.
They process millions of eggs a day at Sunrise producing shell eggs and liquid egg products. Pretty slick how they break the eggs and separate the yokes and the whites in a matter of seconds. Takes a lot of eggs to fill a semi trailer!
Iowa is one of the most competitive places in the world to produce eggs and is the number one egg state in the country. Our egg producers do a great job - and buy a lot of corn and soybean meal!

Clear Lake and Webcast
Posted: Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 9:40:58 AM
by Bill Northey

Off to Farm Bureau's Market Advantage Conference in Clear Lake. It was good to see some friends there including Barry Flinchbaugh. Barry is a Kansas State University Ag Economist that is reknown for his work on ag policy - and for his cigar chewing skills.
Barry's finger prints are all over several past Farm Bills and will certainly be on future legislation. Not only is he influencial, he is a great speaker!
And the cigar chewing thing is pure Barry. He has a cup to catch the outcome of the chewing and I have seen him fill several cups during a day of intense negotiation. He chaired the Commission on 21st Century Production Agriculture that I was on. Sometimes the group didn't agree on some farm policy issues - imagine that... It was a group of conservatives and liberals and, maybe more important, midwesterners, southerners and westerners. Barry did manage to get several significant agreements to emerge from the group. It certainly was a great learning opportunity for me and of course I made sure the Iowa farmers' viewpoints were heard.
I went to the Ag Ventures Board meeting and dinner in Clear Lake. It was good to get caught up. It has been hard to get to the Board Meetings as I have been busy on the road. This is a group of visionary, can do folks that are making things happen in the era of value-added/value-retained agriculture.
On my way home I called in to the Senator Frist webcast. We talked about the Secy of Ag race and its importance. Technology is wonderful. I was on the road, talking on my cell phone with the website up on my laptop computer with its wireless card running. Technology saves so much time and effort - and allows us to try to do much more!

Wyant Event
Posted: Wednesday, August 30, 2006 - 10:31:46 PM
by Bill Northey

Sara Wyant is a Iowa County girl that now lives in Illinois and reports national ag news through her publication, AgriPulse. She does a great job and is well respected. Sara and her husband, Allen Johnson, are also members of the Farm Foundation Roundtable (as am I). They hosted an event for me at her family's farm tonight near Marengo. Another Roundtable member was our special guest at the event, Undersecretary for Rural Development Tom Dorr. Tom is leading the federal government's efforts in Rural Development in one of the most exciting times in Rural Development! It is no accident this is happening. Tom is a visionary leader that has been working on this stuff for decades.
We were treated to a nice dinner after a tour of their new vineyard and some good conversation.
Thanks again for all the support from so many - I work hard everyday to earn it!
Another busy and great day.

Johanns in Scott County
Posted: Wednesday, August 30, 2006 - 10:24:15 PM
by Bill Northey

US Secy of Ag Mike Johanns visited the Paustian hog and crop farm near Walcott (near the largest truck stop in the world if you didn't know!) in Scott County.
A group of farmers gathered in their shop to ask the Secy about ag issues. The Secretary's expertise and frankness came through as it always does and everyone left pleased with his accessability and his work ethic.
We had to jump back in the car for the trip back to the Farm Progress Show to address some more folks at the Monsanto tent. The Monsanto folks were great hosts. Jim Nussle also spoke to this group of customers, employees and media. He talked about the need to be proud of our agriculture again.

Farm Progress Show (Take 2 w/ Johanns)
Posted: Wednesday, August 30, 2006 - 10:16:08 PM
by Bill Northey

Back to the Farm Progress Show and the mud. It was drying a little today, but we still had to dodge large areas of mud. Rain in August - not a bad thing generally.
Everybody who was anybody in ag was at the show today - including US Secy of Agriculture Mike Johanns. It was good to spend some time with him, including being able to be on the WHO Big Show with the Secretary and with Senator Jeff Lamberti.
We got around to some of the other exhibits. So many people - so little time!

Farm Progress Show
Posted: Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - 9:07:40 PM
by Bill Northey

Off to a muddy Farm Progress Show.
Maggie and I made the trip to the show. We got there after the rain, but the effects from the rain were to last the show. Mud was everywhere - in and along the walkways and in the parking area. But, people came anyway.
The Farm Progress Show is a 3-day event where several hundred thousand folks (not a missprint) gather to talk about the advancements in agriculture. A little rain (okay quite a little rain)wasn't going to keep most folks away!
We spent some time at various events and ended the day at the Monsanto tent where I was able to speak to a group of customers and employees. Monsanto drew a great crowd as they had some of their experimental biotech crops on display. These crops should yield more and be in higher demand - not a bad combination...

25 by '25 BBQ & Funder

by Bill Northey

After a full day of discussion of Bio-Renewables from agriculture, folks gathered for some food from Iowa agriculture. In a tent on Central Campus, with rain falling outside, we ate, talked and listened to short speeches.
I got a chance to address the group and reinterated my support for the opportunites presented during the day's sessions. The Secy of Ag must support efforts to realize the future opportunities. Another of the differences in this race. Please help me make it happen!
We had many friends join us in the West Lounge of the ISU Memorial Union for a fundraiser after the 25 by '25 event. Thanks to all who dropped by and thanks for all your support!
And by the way, 25 by '25 is a group working to have 25% of our energy from renewable energy in 2025. An effort that will not only make us more energy independant, but will create economic development in Iowa and across this country.

Bio-Based Industry Outlook Conference
Posted: Monday, August 28, 2006 - 5:50:54 PM
by Bill Northey

I spent some of today at the Bio-based Industry Conference in Ames. This event brought some of the best and brightest in the world together around the prospect of more possibilities for Bioe-Renewables. If you are not excited about the opportunities in Iowa you should have spent a few minutes at this conference. This is not your father's agriculture!
Ag crops will be processed into all kinds of products and certainly into many energy products. Work is going on across the country - certainly much is going on at ISU.
The future is exciting!

Harrison County Republicans
Posted: Sunday, August 27, 2006 - 10:22:18 PM
by Bill Northey

A year ago one of my early campaign events was the Harrison County Republican dinner in Logan. I don't have time to take into account all that has happened in the last year. But, I can tell you I was glad to be back.
Harrison County is an example of the value and importance of local leadership. A dozen years ago a group of folks decided to reorganize the party and gather good candidates. Many of those candidates are still in office and the party is as strong as ever.
Though there are 99 counties in the state all with things to do every night, tonight saw the Lt. Govr Candidate, the Co-chair of the Iowa Republican Party, the Natl Committeeman of Iowa, the Secy of Ag and Secy of State Candidates gathered with over 100 folks from Harrison County in Logan.
Good work and a great reputation is recognized and appreciated!

Greenfield Fly-In

by Bill Northey

Iowa is a big state - especially when you have to get from one side to the other!
I left the Tim2 event last night after 10pm and needed to be in Paullina (NW Iowa) at 6:30am. To bad I didn't have a plane to catch the plane... I made it to Paullina and Verdell Johnson flew me down to the Fly-In at Greenfield. Good to see many folks there including Jim McKnight and Repr. Clel Baudler. I met many other fly-ins and locals. I had a good conversation with Ed Sidey from the local newspaper. The paper has been in the family for 114 years! He has seen many things through the years and is a fountain of knowledge. I look forward to getting back.
Thanks Verdell for the great morning!

Tim and Tim
Posted: Saturday, August 26, 2006 - 11:06:01 PM
by Bill Northey

Tim Recker and Tim Burrack hosted an event for the Nussle Campaign at Tim B's home near Arlington in NE Iowa. This event is a tradition and it was good to be included. Great food, perfect weather and, as Congressman Nussle pointed out, an example of great Iowa Quality of Life! All the way to the end-of-the-evening root beer floats.
I got a chance to speak to the group and received the formal support of the Iowa Corn Growers PAC. There is a lot at stake in this race for Secy of Ag and I am glad to be working with them to get the word out.
So many wonderful Corn Grower friends there tonight...

Corn Growers and IFU
Posted: Saturday, August 26, 2006 - 2:57:50 PM
by Bill Northey

Today I had a chance to talk to the Iowa Corn Growers Association Policy Conference. These are folks that helped make ethanol happen in Iowa and nationally. They have also made a positive difference in thousands of other ways. They were working on the future today as they determined the policy positions for the next year.
It was great to see them again and to say a few words. My only regret is that I couldn't be there for much of the policy discussion - one of my favorite activities.
I headed north from Des Moines to Ankeny for the Iowa Farmers Union meeting. We had a short Secy of Ag Forum there and talked of issues important to their members. Not all of ag agrees on all issues (that would be boring!), but we do agree on the opportunities for Iowa agriculture in renewable energy (no risk of being boring).

Senator Grassley

Senator Grassley took time from his busy schedule to headline an event for me in Des Moines.
It is always great to be around the Senator - especially when he is headlining an event for me! I appreciate his kind words and for the folks that come out for the evening.
Any Iowa politician loves to think they can model a little of the Senator's style of hard work, leadership and relevance to Iowan's lives. All of us have a long ways to go - but we'll keep trying!

Maggie (my campaign manager) and I headed over to Calmar (NE Iowa) for the grazing program they put on. Calmar has a great reputation, though I hadn't seen it for myself yet. The reputation is well deserved.
The dairy business offers us an important opportunity for economic growth in this state. Thanks to our two US Senators for making this Center happen. This project also is in place because of the cooperative efforts with Northeast Iowa Community College and Iowa State University. I look forward to being back when we have more time to get on the pasture and to talk to students.
After some press visits, I headed back to Central Iowa.

Representative Dwayne Alons put together a great cooperative event in Hull tonight. We had folks come out for both him and I. Dwayne did a great job getting hosts and attendees. It was fun to see so many folks turnout on a busy night to show their appreciation for Dwayne and I and to see so many Lyon, Plymouth and Sioux County friends. Thanks for all the support! It was great to have Sen. Mulder, Repr. Soderburg and the next Lt. Governor Vander Plaats there in support as well.
The Cindy and I got headed to Sheldon for the O'Brien County Republican event. I got to say a few words before heading home for my third night (and last) at home this month!

I spent the day in meeting in Central Iowa and then travelled to Atlantic for a forum at a meeting of the SW Iowa Coalition. It was great to see a couple college friends again after a few (okay, many) years! After a meal, we started in with questions and got to most of the important issues.
The SW Iowa Coalition is a nice group of folks working to make sure things get done in SW Iowa. They work with each other rather than in competition, knowing they can benefit from each others successes.
Back to Central Iowa tonight.

Sunday afternoon in SW Iowa on a tree-filled hill, with a light breeze and confortable temperatures and with like-minded friends talking about American values and golden opportunities. Today it was called 2006 version of the Houser family picnic. This is not only a Houser, but American tradition. Oh, and of course great food!
Thanks to Senator Hubert Houser and Reid Houser and to all the folks that made this happen!

Iowa State Fair

by Bill Northey

I can't believe the Iowa State Fair is almost over!
Cindy and I got back to the Fair today. We spent some time at the busy Republican Booth, in the Ag Building - and of course eating! Back to pork chop on a stick, a corn dog and a pecan salted nut roll - all Northey traditions. I got to meet lots of folks in the Ag Building and at the R booth. Some folks I hadn't met before, some folks from yesterday's Farm Bureau meeting and some folks I hadn't seen in years.
Sometimes I wish the whole campaign could be conducted at the Fair! My Mom and Dad spent several days working the Fair Booth this year as well. Thanks to them for their hard work, many contacts gathered and even more brochures passed out! Thanks to April and all the volunteers at the booth - it always seemed busy and was a nice opportunity for folks to get more information and for candidates to meet voters.
And of course, you still have another day to take it in before it fakes away for another year.

A new winery has opened up just west of Oskaloosa and it is called Tassel Ridge Winery. It is run by Bob Wersen and is a showcase of the growing wine industry in Iowa.
I stopped by the winery on my way out of town. Bob was there and gave me tour of his facilities - very impressive!! Everything is in full operation including their filtering machine - a $50,000 unit, one of few in the US and the only in Iowa. They certainly have a commitment to quality that is evident throughout their operation.

Boswell Hearing

I slipped in late to Congressman Boswell's Ag Policy Hearing in Oskaloosa. I got to see some ag friends there and hear some good discussion on federal ag policy. The Congressman also had Congressman Collin Peterson from Minnesota with him. Congressman Peterson certainly was important to some of the progress in ethanol on the federal level over the years.
Since the hearing was held at the Extension Office, I got to swing by and talk to Extension Farm Management Specialist Bob Wells for a while before heading out of town. We have work on several projects together through the years.

FB Forum
Posted: Friday, August 18, 2006 - 11:33:18 AM
by Bill Northey

The Iowa Farm Bureau Voting Delegate Session was moved from December to August this year to determine their policy earlier in the legislative and elective processes.
I sat this morning with my opponent in front of that group taking questions for two hours. Great questions from a informed group of farmers. The policy differences came out clearly and would give all an opportunity to make a clear choice in this race.
Farm Bureau develops their policy through a deliberative process. Policies are established at the county level. A voting delegate is sent from each county to sessions that determine state policy. Policy positions that survive this process have been tested to understand the consequences. They become the policy marching orders of Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.
This is a similar method to their Friend of Agriculture endorsement method. Recommendations are sent from the counties to the state PAC Committee. They read and tally the recs and make their determination. Today was another step in that process. We will know the result later...

Endorsements

by Bill Northey

I am pleased to announce I have recieved the endorsements of the Iowa Corn Growers Association and the Agribusiness Association of Iowa!
These are groups that limit their endorsements to a few races where they see higher stakes and significant differences between the candidates.
Groups often endorse incumbants - recognizing folks that have been particularly helpful to them.
I can't tell you how excited I am to get into endorsement season and to get endorsements from the Corn Growers and from the Agribusiness Association. I have met with both groups severals times and believe me their process is thorough (as it should be)! These are two very important groups in Iowa Agriculture and I a proud to work with them!

Lytton Farm Tour

by Bill Northey

On my way to the Farm Bureau meeting in Storm Lake, I swung by a Alternative Technology Demonstration Project Open House south of Lytton.
These projects are confirming the opportunity to use less expensive passive technology to clean up water coming off cattle yards. This technology will be more friendly to family farmers trying to grow their farms. Regulations are hard on the medium-sized cattle feeding farms. The regs require large capital investments to be made on all farms over 1000 head of cattle. The investment requirement is so large the farms often need to expand to over 3000 head to justify the expense. Alternative Technologies allow modeling to design a size-appropriate system. Important stuff!

Secy Johanns drew a nice crowd of farm leaders to Sioux County today. He was there to announce grant awards and a new USDA policy paper on agriculture and energy.
His visit coincided with a tour group from the Farm Foundation to Siouxland Energy Cooperative and Dordt College. It was good to see many friends a part of that group.
I appreciated the chance to spend a few minutes talking one-on-one with the Secretary about issues of importance to Iowa agriculture and the Iowa Secy of Ag race. Great to have him back in Iowa!

I could feel the love and respect in the Dows Convention Center for Stew Iverson. The event was an evening to honor the service of Stewart Iverson. These are folks that have supported Stew for many years and they are ones that know him best. Some had traveled from far away to show their support for him, but most were local friends and neighbors. Every retiree should be so fortunate to have a night like this. Then again, few have given so much of their life to others as has Stew. And he's not done serving!

I made it to the Scott County Fair this morning from Sioux City last night. Good to see Reps. Jim Van Fossen and Steve Olson and soon-to-be Supervisor Richard Gollinghorst this morning.
This afternoon Bryan Sievers got me to lots of folks. Maggie (Maggie Halferty is our campaign jack-of-all-trades) got to ride a wagon in the National Belgian Horse Show. With her participation she got our campaign mentioned twice from the announcer!
On my way out of the grounds, I stopped by the Republican booth and saw Supervisor Larry Minard.
Supervisor Greg Adamson came to our meet-and-greet at the Thunderbay Grill as did several others. It was a nice way to top off a day in Scott County.

Like a LICA

by Bill Northey

Today is a day to get miles on the F150. I started at Coralville and my first stop is outside Melbourne (in Marshall County). The Land Improvement Contractors Assn was having their field day. All over the farm were folks using new equipment to dig and push dirt.
I was especially intrigued with the water control structures they were demonstrating. These structures are placed in tile lines and allow a producer to control the outflow of water from a field or part of a field. Most farms in Iowa have some tile in them to take away the excess water to allow for good crop growth. These control structures turn the tile into a management opportunity (most tile are currently passive - if the water is in the tile, it leaves the farm). This can hold the water in the tile (and therefore the farm) if desired. Advantages include keeping some extra water around for crops for dry times of the year, holding the water to let nutrients absorb into the soil and reducing the total flow of water and nutrients off the farm (by 30-60%!). I believe this will be a part of our future strategies to increase production and to decrease nutrients lost from our fields to our surface water.

This morning Jan and I discussed the Natural Gas Drilling legislation just passed, ethanol and the campaign for Secy of Agriculture. Jan "did the work of the farm guys." Bruce was there to defend the farm team, as Mark was off and Ken was off to Iraq. This was Ken's quick trip to Iraq with the US Secy of Ag. It was interesting to listen to his reports from half way around the world while in the studio where we have talked many times.

I pick up lots of ideas on the campaign trail. I also picked up a nail in the tire on my pickup. I got it fixed this morning and got to the Emmet County Fair.
I got to see the cattle show (four classes of breeding heifers!) and slipped by the Open Horse Show.
It was fun to watch Joe and Jody's Greig's daughter ride. Looks like they welded her to the horse! I think they would have a hard time getting her off.
